MARAGUSAN CELEBRATES PHILIPPINE ENVIRONMENT MONTH AND ARBOR DAY 2013
Every 25th of June, the “Philippine Arbor Day” is celebrated nationwide pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 396 enjoining all public and private sectors to conduct tree planting activities aimed to promote a
healthier ecosystem through rehabilitation and re-greening of the environment. For 3 years in a row since 2010, Maragusan observes the celebration in line also of the Nation’s Environment Month held every month of June through a simultaneous tree planting activity in different identified planting sites with this year’s theme “Pagtanom, Pag-amuma ug Paghinumdom” (Plant, Nurture, and Cherish).
To put ardour to the said celebrations, the local leadership of Maragusan highlighted the site clean-up and planting of trees at the once “high grade” but now deserted mining site at Sitio Butay of Barangay Pamintaran in Maragusan, Compostela Valley.
Spearheaded by the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) who led the activity’s overall preparations and coordination in collaboration with Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Barangay Government of Pamintaran and the site land owners who did the planting site preparation, the activity was in general successful despite the persistent rains experienced.
Not an easy task though, the tree planting activity is a test of dedication and commitment. Aside from the muddy road going to the site due to torrential rains, there were also traces of solid wastes left by irresponsible miners in the planting site which was voluntarily cleared by Municipal Emergency Response Team (MERT), MENRO personnel and barangay Pamintaran functionaries.
212 participants representing individuals and groups joined the activity unfazed by the weather condition and the hardship of getting into the planting site. The program run smoothly and was formally opened by a welcome address delivered by Ferdinand E. Bautista, head of the MENRO. In his message, he extends his gratitude and acknowledgement to Maragusan mayor Cesar C. Colina, Sr. for supporting and gracing the tree planting activity.
Aside the participants coming from the local government and the national agencies, Bautista also thankfully acknowledged all the participating individuals and groups namely: Mr. Angelito Cabalquinto, Ms. Arceli Hangad, Mr. Manuel Sayson, Comex Tunnel, Mr. Angelo Sotto, Mr.Joevir Yu, Mr. Rene Cinco and Alto/Summex Tunnel; Dole Valley Zone (DVZ), Maragusan Multi Purpose Cooperative (MAMPCO), MAGROW, ASIAPRO, RECON Marangig, Municipal Emergency Response Team (MERT), DVZ Responders, Maragusan United Pastors Association (MUPA); land owners Mr.& Mrs. Canoy, Mr. & Mrs. Gante, Mr. & Mrs.Talabok, Ms. Precy Lagura, and Mr. Dodo Jugadora.
In his Solidarity message, Mayor Cesar Colina recognized and commended the active participation of all sectors and the leadership of MENRO. He stressed that though Butay mine site provides employment and other economic opportunities to Maragusan, an apparent ecological destruction is collateral. The effects have been felt but the initiatives to avert bigger catastrophes are seriously done such as what is accomplished of the activity. He further stressedthat the Arbor Day is a perfect time to appreciate trees in its aesthetics and usefulness and it is now the high time to give everything we can to replenish nature. And sharing our time and effort through planting trees is a clear response.
After planting all the prepared seedlings of Narra and Mahogany species in a hectare of land, the Barangay Government of Pamintaran through Punong Barangay Daniel Matildo and Butay Land Owners pledged their commitment to nurture the newly planted trees. It is indeed good to know that all that attended the activity is united for a cause...to answer the cry of nature. (Charito Garzon - MENRO)
